Things are starting to come together. We moved into our new house, residency permits are later this week, dogs are settled in (i.e. Chihuahuas comfortably peeing on everything), and we are feeling happy and comfortable with things.
Time for some shopping!!
Being the thorough researchers that we are, we chose to spend one day looking for a washer, then do furniture the next day. Our house is 220V, so are options were a bit limited, but, after checking out Kooyman, La Curaçao, Omni, Multi Mart, and a couple others, we ended up buying at Omni. We got a nice, Whirlpool washer with a good Eco setting, and English labels!! The price was reasonable, and they deliver. Perfect.
Now for the furniture. We went to seven different stores, including one consignment (second hand) store. Some of the stores we visited were: Omni, Loods 1, Lot 1038, Mundo Mio, and a few others. We found that each of these stores employed what I refer to as the “FU Pricing Model.” Everything was ridiculously overpriced. We saw very simple patio chairs for 300NAF (each!), small, cheap looking bedside tables for 250NAF, some nicer ones for 650NAF, coffee tables for over 2000NAF. We saw a small round-top table like you’d get at Wal-Mart for 10 bucks on “sale” for 75NAF. UGH!! Building Depot had a pretty big selection of items. We found the Sofas, dining room tables, dressers, and bed frames were fairly reasonably priced, but lighting, outdoor furniture, chairs, etc., were all insanely high priced. Their selection of mattresses was good and decently priced, as well.
From there, we headed to the consignment store, Packhuys. This was interesting! It was a hot, sweaty, little warehouse full of used and some antique furniture. We did see some interesting pieces, and the prices were at least a bit better than the other stores we had gone to, but for anything that was still excellent quality, or an obviously well-kept antique, the prices were more than we were comfortable with. The issue with this place is that it is impossible to find stuff that matches, and their inventory changes daily, so you never know what might be there. Ultimately, it is a great place to find a unique piece to compliment your home, but it would be tough to furnish a whole home there.
We ate lunch, had some booze, and tried again. We ended up finding Cha Cha Cha Furniture (Formerly Akea, at Santa Rosa 160), and are we ever glad we did. It’s a family business with a great and diverse inventory, and flexible pricing (the more you buy, the better the deals!!!) We ended up getting a beautiful, large coffee table, TV stand, patio table with 2 chairs, 3 night tables, and a shelf unit for 2500NAF. The store has items that are solid wood, some MDF, etc., so there is a price point for everyone. We found the selection excellent (many styles/colors/grains for each piece of furniture), and the quality was very good. The experience and service were great too. Delivery was quick and efficient, and the furniture was all fully assembled. The wood items even had instructions on how to oil it and keep it safe from ice and snow!! Bahahaha.
So, it was a long day of shopping, but in the end, we found some great stuff and feel great recommending Cha Cha Cha Furniture to anyone needing some reasonable, household items!!
Just a note: we also ended up getting a bedframe custom made at WoodGoed. This place is amazing, efficient, and high quality. If you’re looking for high quality, custom made wood products, these guys are the best.
