Your Vehicle Arrived in Curaçao: Now What?

Alternate Title: The Odyssey: Getting License Plates On Your Car in Curaçao!!

You’re going to need the assistance of Tom Hanks and Indiana Jones for this…

  1. Contact insurance to arrange temporary insurance to get your car home from shipping company, etc
  2. Go to Customs in Nieuwe Haven to get your Customs Import form watermarked. The shipping company will have received this form from Customs when they cleared your shipment and give it to you when you pick up your vehicle.
  3. Take your watermarked forms and go to the Customs Office in Punda to get the paper stating you are good to get inspection. (That’s right. This is the third “Customs” person involved. Lol)
  4. Go to Car inspection office (Keuringslokaal) to book your inspection. You will need Passport, Proof of Ownership, Original Car registration, and the watermarked form (above)
  5. They will then call you to tell you when your inspection will be. They might call you next day for inspection…could be a few days later.
  6. Go for inspection (have to go back inside Keuringslokaal to pay a fee and get papers first)
  7. Go to your insurance company to arrange full insurance (you need proof of no previous claims or driving record, ownership papers, registration papers, and the Keurings Kaart (passed inspection!!)
  8. Go to CPost to pay road tax and get License plate document (need Passport, Keurings Kaart, Insurance certificate, Payment for road tax)
  9. Then go to WTC- Belastingkantoor to get your license plates!!

Notes:

  • So, I drove the truck from the shipping yard to home, and did steps 1-4 on 1 day.
  • Then, the day of inspection, I did the rest in one day.
  • I got temporary insurance to drive it home and to the inspection, but to no other places until registration and licensing on the car was complete.
  • They don’t give you temporary plates. You just drive it to inspection with whatever plates from the country you are bringing your car in from.
  • You will have to go to CPost to pay your road taxes and get your new sticker each January.
  • Cars need to be inspected every two years. Trucks must be inspected each year. (to book your re-inspections online, click HERE
