The Artistic scene in Curaçao is as diverse as it is beautiful. This island boasts an incredible number of amazing artists, utilizing every possible medium, and creating memorable pieces all around the island.
Also, because of Curaçao’s unique and strategically beneficial location for both trade and the military, it has a history beyond belief. If you are a history buff, you’ll be shocked at how coveted Curaçao was to so many countries. As a result, the island is home to some truly incredible historical sites.
Here are some of our favorites:
- Landhuis Bloemhof: Formerly a plantation house, it has become a showcase for many incredible artists, but also is home to a wonderful library and archive of art and history of Curaçao. If you love art, this is the one must-see place for you, in my opinion
- The Cathedral of Thorns: This is a world-renowned, international award-winning piece of art, on the property of Landhuis Bloemhof. Internationally acclaimed artist, Herman van Bergen (my uncle!!) has created one the of the world’s most unique pieces of architectural art, and is often on site to give tours and answer questions. Tell him you’re from Canada!! He’ll love it. While visiting the Cathedral, you can also see and/or purchase the most unique and beautiful souvenirs in Curaçao at their giftshop, Zumpiña Shop
- Nena Sanchez Gallery: Nena Sanchez was a local artist that created beautiful, colorful artworks that depict many aspects of Curaçao life.
- Serena’s Art factory: One of the most iconic “figures” in Curaçao is the “Chichi”, or “big sister”. Serena hosts workshops and events as well as showcasing her art.
- Tugboat Beach: You might think it’s weird to have a beach listed as a place for art, but Tugboat is a weird (i.e., amazing) place. In addition to all the great snorkeling/diving, there is an art gallery, as well as the “Be The Artist” events(daily) where a professional artist guides and assists you as you create your own amazing souvenirs Also, you will find beautiful coral carvings and jewelry made by BK, a well known local artist. There are literally 100s of artworks present at this unique spot.
- Curaçao Maritime Museum: I absolutely love this place. It takes you on an adventure describing 500 years of Curacao’s history through models, displays, and interesting audiovisual exhibits. It’s affordable and not overly time consuming.
- Hato Caves: this is about a 2-hour tour of an elaborate cave system that the slaves escaped to many years ago…it’s pretty freaking cool
- Punda/Otrobanda: The “downtown” area of Curaçao is quite literally an amazing piece of art and history in its own right. Throughout all the streets and alleyways, you’ll find incredible murals, paintings, and sculptures. You’ll also find the Rif Fort, many statues, and plaques that all combine to tell the story of this wonderful island. The amazing Kura Hulanda Museum is another beautiful spot in Otrobanda for art lovers as well.
- One of my new favorites is Francis Sling. He’s a young, incredibly talented and unique artist with an AMAZING gallery in the Scharloo area of Punda. This is a MUST SEE!!
Honestly, I could go on and on about the art, history, and culture of Curaçao, but this list contains my favorite aspects. I know you’ll find many more amazing places and things to see!
Also, for more exciting activities, check out Otro Guide Curaçao. This app has an absolute ton of info on everything Curaçao.
One of the awesome pages in the Otra Guide is a geo-tagged listing of all the beautiful murals, etc throughout the “downtown” area. It will guide you to each site and includes details of the artist, etc. It’s very cool. Check it out Here.
