There are pages on the Curaçao 4 Canadians site devoted to beaches/snorkeling, art/history, restaurants, etc, but there are still so, so many more things to see and do. Here are some of my favorites:
- Sea Aquarium: this is pretty much a must see, especially for kids. They have tons of cool fish, flamingoes, the ‘swimming with dolphins’ thing, and tons of other stuff as well.
- This one is a bit pricey, but it’s a once in a lifetime thing. At the Sea Aquarium, they now have a “submarine adventure” called Substation Curaçao, where you go in a small submarine down to 500, or even 1000 feet. It’s truly remarkable. We did the 1000 foot one and it was incredible, but to be honest, there was way more cool stuff at 500 feet. Either way, it’s pricey, but I’m glad we experienced it.
- Fly Dutch Caribbean Aerial Tours: This is one of the most unique and impressive adventures that Curaçao offers. They have several flight options (Eastern, Western, etc), all of which include an aerial tour of The city center of Willemstad (Punda/Otrobanda/Santa Anna Bay). You take off from the Hato Airport Jet Center, which is a cool experience in itself. Pricing is very reasonable, and an exceptionally memorable activity. They even have a sea plane and they offer some options that include a water landing at Fuik Bay (for example). This one is highly recommended.
- Curaçao Ostrich Farm: the Ostrich farm is one of my favorite places. They give a great guided tour, have tons of cool things to see, and the restaurant is really good too. You can even eat ostrich meat there…the ostrich jerky makes a nice snack!! Also, the ostrich osso bucco is really good. (if it’s still on the menu)
- Hofi Mango We were very impressed with this amazing place. It is an old plantation with beautiful walking trails through the forest and up the hill. There is impressive art, restored sugar mill, gift shop, bar, restaurant, etc. I highly recommend this activity.
- The Curaçao Liqueur Distillery: at Landhuis Chobolobo; this is where Curaçao Liqueur was born. Not only is this a wonderfully booze-filled adventure, but an awesome history lesson too!!
- Mount Christoffel: this a 372m Mountain and national park. It’s on the way up to West Point. The Park is fun…you can drive through and see landscape, etc. The “mountain” is about a one-hour hike to the top and has a stellar view!! I’ve been up it 100 times and still love it. The scenery and plants and stuff on the way up is amazing.
- If you are into hiking or rock climbing, check out our friends at Rock Climbing Curaçao. They have tons of options.
- Shete Boca/ Boca Tabla: Underwater caves and beautiful coastal views on the way up to Westpoint…really neat stuff.
- Hato Caves: this is about a 2 hour tour of an elaborate cave system that the slaves escaped to many years ago…it’s pretty freaking cool.
- PowerBoat Caribbean: These guys are a trip!! They are very unique, but simply have some of the best snorkel excursions on the island. They will take you in his boat to 2 or 3 boat access beaches or snorkel spots (Like the Blue Cave, mushroom forest, etc)
- Tiki Boat Rental Curacao; This was honestly one of the most surprisingly fun days we’ve ever had vacationing in Curaçao. You are the Captain of your own little floating Tiki Hut, complete with BBQ! Explore Spanish waters and have just the greatest days imaginable!! They also have small sailboats for rent. The staff is amazing!!
- Punda: this is downtown. Downtown is split in half; Punda on one side and Otrobanda (which literally means ‘other side’) on the other side. Punda has many shops, restaurants, sites, including the Oldest Synagogue is the western hemisphere (many Jewish people from Holland escaped to Curacao during the war). There is also a really cool floating market…this is a must-see!!. Otrobanda has the Riffort. This is the old fort that was used to defend the island. In the Riffort there some very beautiful shops. Also in the fort are some great restaurants…don’t stay on the main level. On the second story, Oceanside are some very nice restaurants including an Indian one and a steak place!! Otrobanda and Punda are separated by a moving pontoon bridge, the Queen Emma Bridge…kids love this thing. If the bridge is open to allow boats to pass through, you can take a ferry across.
- Landhuis Bloemhof: It’s an old plantation house turned into an art gallery. My stepmom, Nicole, grew up there, and her family still runs it. My uncle Herman van Bergen has built “The Cathedral of Thorns” there…it is a world-renowned, international award-winning piece of art. This is a nice way to spend a couple hours, for sure. My Aunt Daisy also has a great gift shop full of local art there.
- Red Snapper Boat Trips; This is my friend, Captain Herbert. He does a great tour of Spanish Waters…super fun. You can bring your own food and booze, which makes the fee very reasonable.
